In the center of Moscow, on Podkolokolny Pereulok, a historic mansion was scheduled for demolition to make way for new residential development. The announcement exposed the rapid disappearance of independent cultural spaces in the city. Rather than accepting its loss, we initiated the process of renting the building from government authorities for a limited period, navigating complex administrative procedures to legally transform it into a temporary cultural venue before its demolition.

The project extended beyond art direction and exhibition making. It required coordination between artists, local communities, and municipal institutions in order to legally activate the space before its demolition.

Within a limited timeframe, we brought together artists and audiences to temporarily inhabit the building — transforming a place awaiting demolition into a living platform for non-gallery art exhibitions.

BEFORE IT DISAPPEARS

august 2024

Long before we entered the space, the mansion had already lived through decades of transformation. These archival images capture fragments of its original identity — the details that survived time, neglect, and eventual demolition.

Understanding the building’s histдory deepened our relationship with the space and shaped the way we treated it during the project.
