role
Art Direction / Visual Identity / Spatial Art Direction
a community-driven cultural initiative that transformed a condemned historic mansion into a temporary hub for non-gallery art exhibitions.
this is how to disappear
Small improvements compound when they are repeated. Pick one simple step, make it easy to do, and let time turn consistency into results.
By 2024, many historic buildings in central Moscow were being demolished to make space for new residential developments. This process affected not only the architecture of the city, but also the independent cultural environment around these spaces.

One of these places was an abandoned mansion on Podkolokolny Pereulok, located near art studios and local creative communities.

The awareness of its upcoming demolition became the starting point for ArtDvizh — an initiative focused on temporarily activating the space through independent, non-gallery exhibitions.
overview
By early August 2024, we were aware that the mansion would soon be demolished.

We began looking for ways to access the building and temporarily rent it from local authorities. After a series of approvals, we were able to enter the space and prepare it for exhibitions.

Before its demolition, the building was transformed into a temporary venue for independent art projects.
Project Development
CONDITION
╚═══════ ■ ╝
At the time of access, the building was in a neglected condition, filled with debris and traces of its past use.
PREPARATION
╔ ■ ═══════╗
The space was cleared and minimally prepared while preserving its original surfaces and atmosphere.
FIRST ACTIVATION
╚════ ■ ■ ════╗
After preparation, the first artists were invited, opening the space for an independent exhibition.
The project was created by three collaborators — an artist, a photographer, and a florist.

Together, we prepared the space, organized exhibitions, and worked with artists, transforming the abandoned building into a temporary exhibition venue.

OPENING
After preparation, the space opened to artists and visitors.

The exhibitions took place in a constantly evolving environment. As the scale grew, we stayed on site to manage the space and ensure the safety of the artworks.
EACH OPENING EXPANDED THE SCALE OF THE PROJECT.

Visual IDENTITY
TYPOGRAPHY
PRATA
KAISEI HARUNOUMI
A combination of two typefaces was used to create contrast between structure and expression.

Special attention was given to Cyrillic support and letterforms.
COLOR SYSTEM
The color palette was based on the visual environment of the building.

The main colors made the space visible and recognizable within the city.
LOGO
The logotype was based on coded typography.

It references hidden information and restricted access.
COMMUNICATION
No printed materials were produced for the project.

The building itself became the main communication medium due to its location and visual presence.

A spatial map was also created for navigation and safety.
I was responsible for the artistic direction, visual identity, and spatial experience of the project.

All decisions were made directly inside the building, based on its architecture and condition.

Shortly after the exhibitions ended, the building was demolished.

For a brief moment, it became a temporary space for independent art.

The project showed how abandoned buildings can be used as cultural platforms before they disappear.
